Position Statement:
Dear Colleagues,
As fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons, we are privileged to belong to an organization dedicated to advancing our specialty and supporting us throughout our careers. I am honored to be nominated for the ACMS Board of Directors and am humbled by the opportunity to serve our membership.
Throughout my career, I have embraced leadership and educational roles, including Director of Dermatologic and Mohs Surgery at SkinMD and founder and former Director of the MSDO Fellowship. Training the next generation of Mohs surgeons remains one of my greatest professional commitments. My academic role at Indiana University, along with a cross-appointment in Head & Neck Surgery, has strengthened my multidisciplinary approach to cutaneous oncology and reconstruction. Transitioning from academia to private practice further broadened my understanding of the diverse challenges faced across practice settings. These experiences have shaped my commitment to collaborative, emotionally intelligent leadership that prioritizes mentorship, respectful dialogue, and support for colleagues at all stages of their careers.
I have authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in Mohs surgery, skin cancer treatment, and reconstruction. My research focuses on improving outcomes, advancing surgical innovation, and integrating new technologies into patient care—reinforcing the essential role of academic inquiry in clinical progress.
For more than a decade, I have contributed to the ACMS through service on the Board Certification Task Force, the Diagnostic Quality Control & Teaching Library, and the Mohs Pathology Question of the Week Subcommittee. I also previously co-chaired the ASDS Research Work Group and continue to serve as a reviewer for national and international journals.
My commitment to global collaboration has expanded significantly in recent years. I am one of the founding members of the International Consortium of Mohs Surgery (ICMS), a new initiative in early launch aimed at strengthening international partnerships, mentorship, and shared surgical standards. Through the International Society of Dermatology (ISD), I serve as a surgical mentor worldwide and as a member of the ISD Board, where I am helping expand surgical education and hands-on training in global regional meetings.
My experiences in leadership, research, mentorship, and international collaboration have strengthened my belief that the ACMS is uniquely positioned to guide the continued evolution of our specialty. I remain committed to serving with integrity, humility, and emotional intelligence as we advance Mohs surgery together.
Thank you for considering my candidacy.
Sincerely,
Ally-Khan Somani, MD, PhD, EMBA
