Orbital and Eyelid Anatomy

Statement of Need
Surgical procedures performed in the periorbital region that involve resection and subsequent reconstruction are often met with hesitation due to the impact that poorly understood anatomy can have on clinical outcomes. While standard description of periorbital anatomy is diagrammatically well represented, very few resources use effective photographic images to detail the complex arrangement of anatomy around the superficial territory of the orbit.

The aim of this webinar is to provide participants with a surgical perspective of the anatomy of the periorbital region including key structures of the orbit, eyelids and contents of the anterior and posterior lamella using high quality images and video recordings of un-embalmed cadaveric dissections.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Appreciate the layered anatomy of the periorbital region and appreciate the relationship between skin, mimetic muscles, fat pads and associated neurovascular structures;
  2. Identify important danger zones using surface landmarks and key anatomical structures;
  3. Visualize traversing intraorbital structures;
  4. Describe the contents of the anterior and posterior lamella of the eyelid and how they relate to each other.

Nirusha Lachman, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Anatomy, College of Medicine with joint appointment in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery at Mayo Clinic. Her primary focus lies in integrating anatomy education for everyday practice, and she is one of few clinical anatomists in the world who works collaboratively on a daily basis with clinicians in a practice-based setting. In her 20-year career as a clinical anatomist, Dr. Lachman has contributed more than 74 scientific publications in peer reviewed journals, 16 book chapters and numerous abstract publications and national and international presentations.
