A 71 year-old man presents for treatment of a recurrent melanoma in situ on the left neck. H&E and MART-1 immunostains are performed during Mohs surgery. This MART-1 slide is from the first layer. What is your next step?

  • Stop. The margin is clear. Only normal skin is appreciated.
  • Stop. The margin is clear but a solar lentigo is also present in the background.
  • The peripheral margin is positive due to melanoma in situ. Take an additional layer.
  • The peripheral margin is due to melanoma in situ. Invasive melanoma is also present. Take an additional layer.
